Stage 8: Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS)
Even when everything else has been done we will still need to use some amounts of fossil fuels. Reducing the carbon emissions here relies on trapping the emissions, stabilising the carbon and putting it into long-term storage. There are four CCS pilot plant in the UK and 15 in the EU, each is being funded to establish the extent to which we can rely on CCS as a way forward.
One interesting area is biochar, a charcoal product produced as a result of gasifying organic fuels such as wood. Research is seeking to establish the conditions under which applying biochar to land can enhance the soil’s ability to store carbon.
Service: Carbon Offset Advice
Offsetting carbon emissions is the final stage in the carbon reduction process. It involves making financial contributions to activities external to your organisation and then claiming those reductions for yourself. Offsetting projects are divided into two categories: certified and voluntary. Certified schemes guarantee real carbon savings so are useful if it is important to verify carbon savings. Voluntary schemes are less well verified but can still be of value, particularly if there are additional social and environmental benefits to these projects.
