CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme

From April 2010, all organisations that had at least one half hourly meter settled on the half hourly market in 2008 will be required to attend to the Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC) Energy Efficiency Scheme. The government estimates this to include some 20,000 public and private sector organisations. The CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme is a central framework in the UK's strategy for improving energy efficiency and reducing carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions.

Approximately 5,000 organisations will be required to participate fully with CRC meaning that they must record and monitor their carbon emissions and also purchase allowances equivalent to their annual emissions. Organisations with at least 6,000 MWh of electricity consumed through 2008 fall into this category. The CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme is intended to encourage behaviour change and raise awareness in large organisations.

Preparing for CRC

The first step in preparing for CRC is to get an accurate record of your emissions. Emissions that will be included in CRC are then separated into those that will be included in the CRC and those that will not. A footprint report will need to be presented to the auditors by July 2011.

Meeting CRC confidently

Clearly, the fewer emissions your organisation produces, the less you will have to pay. The LCIC carbon consulting service provides a methodology to help you address all aspects of carbon management including how to encourage buy-in from your workforce to reduce emissions, organisational footprinting, and strategic carbon planning to help identify and prioritise options effectively.

Companies that take early action to reduce their emissions will be rewarded and a good position on the league table will enhance an organisation’s reputation to shareholders and customers alike. Taking steps now to improve your energy efficiency will put your organisation ahead of your competitors.
