Associate Consultants

Martin Ingham

A Chartered Civil Engineer, Martin has more than 25 years of experience as an independent management consultant working in the areas of business consulting and project management. Wishing to make a contribution to carbon reduction and progressing the sustainability agenda Martin undertook the MBA in Strategic Carbon Management at UEA in 2008, gaining a distinction. Since then he has consulted predominantly on sustainable energy supply, and on energy efficiency in the built environment. The latter has included consultancy for LCIC on the EU North Sea Region Interreg IVB funded project Build with CaRe, focusing on approaches to overcoming barriers to low carbon construction and refurbishment. Martin has gained particular expertise on monitoring and analysing low energy buildings and their in-use performance to ascertain whether they meet design expectations; that is for the fabric, the technology, and in enabling low energy occupant behaviour.

Dr Thomas Macagno

Dr Thomas Macagno is a thought leader in sustainability.   He sees sustainability as a mega-trend impacting every product or service produced and a force for social change reshaping society. Thomas began his career in the IT industry holding various international roles in product marketing and innovation management.    His experience working with Internet start-ups taught him how new ideas and technologies can rapidly change business and the economy.  Foreseeing the importance of sustainability he further developed his understanding of sustainable development by undertaking a PhD at the University of East Anglia.  This experience gave him the opportunity to explore how global companies like HSBC and SAB Miller manage corporate social responsibility.  Most recently, Thomas held the position of Head of Sustainability at May Gurney.   His key responsibilities were to lead thought on sustainability integrate it into day-to-day operations.

Dr Bruce Tofield, CChem, FRSC, FRSA

Bruce has led work on biofuels, transport and low-carbon construction within the LCIC. He brokered the project to create the UK's first dual-fuel (biomethane and diesel) low-emissions, low-carbon bus as part of UEA's activity in the EU-supported Civitas II SMILE programme. Within SMILE he facilitated a new supply chain for sustainable biodiesel and a spin-off from the transport work on biofuels has been a successful project with the UK oil-fired heating industry trialling renewable heating oil blends. He is now leading UEA's activity in the Interreg N Sea programme Build with CaRe (Carbon Reduction), 2008-11, that aims to mainstream low-carbon construction.

Dr Keith Tovey, M.A, PhD, C.Eng, MICE - Scientific Advisor - Energy

Keith read Mechanical Sciences at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge and completed his PhD at Cambridge. He joined the School of Environmental Sciences at the University of East Anglia in 1973. During the 1980s Keith’s research interest turned to energy related matters. From 1992 to 1996 he was Vice Chairman of Sub Commission B of the International Society of Soil Science and from 1996 to 2002 was International Secretary of the International Geological Correlation Programme 396: Continental Shelves in the Quaternary. Since 2001, Keith’s research has been largely focussed on energy and carbon reduction. Since 2003, he has been regularly advising groups within the Energy Industries and Parliaments, from Russia, Ukraine, and Kazakhstan, and more recently on collaborative projects exploring low carbon futures in China.
